Vasculitis Centers and CSS (EGPA) Medical Experts

The CSSA encourages patients to seek out the best medical care available. Because CSS/EGPA is such a rare disease, finding expert care can be difficult. The following medical resources either have dedicated vasculitis centers focused on treating different forms of vasculitis, including EGPA (Churg-Strauss), or a strong research interest in vasculitis and/or eosinophilic disorders. In addition, the CSSA’s stellar Medical Advisory Board is comprised of world renown experts. Many of these experts are willing to consult with local physicians on difficult cases, as time permits. Some patients travel great distances for a complete work up at one of the vasculitis centers. The center then works with the patient’s local physician to co-ordinate care at home.

Some of the resources in this section are geared toward medical professionals.

Massachusetts General Hospital Vasculitis Center

MA General Hospital Vasculitis Center

Boston, MA

From the Mass General website:

Early Diagnosis, Multidisciplinary Care for Vasculitis Rheumatologists at the Massachusetts General Hospital Vasculitis Program have extensive experience recognizing how vasculitis can affect different organs and take a team approach to safely and effectively treating all forms of the disease, including Churg Strauss Syndrome.

Vasculitis causes inflammation in and damage to blood vessels, including arteries, veins and capillaries. As a result, it can affect virtually any organ in the body.

Fortunately, all forms of vasculitis are treatable. The key is to make a diagnosis before the disease has inflicted permanent organ damage. At the Mass General Vasculitis Program, we focus on diagnosing vasculitis early and then administering treatment safely and effectively.

Multidisciplinary expertise, a major strength at Mass General, is essential in caring for patients with multi-organ system disorders such as vasculitis. Our rheumatologists can coordinate clinical care with other world-class specialists throughout the hospital.

John Stone, MD, MPH, has directed the Vasculitis program since 2008 He has an international reputation for clinical and research expertise in vasculitis. He co-founded the John Hopkins Vasculitis Center in 1997 and directed the center from 2000 to 2006.

Division of Rheumatology

Why National Jewish Health?

Our specialists are on the cutting edge for new treatment. And through clinical research we are helping discover which medications might be best for patients with many diseases. We are also investigating new therapies which may be released in the future.

Our strength as a division is directly linked to the strengths of National Jewish Health, specifically with rheumatologic (also called autoimmune) lung disease. The Rheumatology Division works collaboratively with the Interstitial Lung Disease Program and the Pulmonary programs in general to provide an unparalleled resource for patients in the assessment and management of autoimmune lung disease. In essence, this is the backbone of the Autoimmune Lung Center.

What do we do?

Rheumatology: We provide comprehensive diagnostic and therapeutic services to patients with a broad range of musculoskeletal problems, including scleroderma, systemic lupus erythematosus, rheumatoid arthritis, inflammatory myopathies and systemic vasculitis.

Michael Wechsler,  MD,  is Director of Asthma and Associate Professor of Medicine at National Jewish Health in Denver. The Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center has led or participated in all of the major U.S.-based multi-centered clinical trials in vasculitis in the past ten years.

From the website:

The Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center sees patients with suspected or confirmed diagnoses of vasculitis. Our doctors are attending physicians and full time faculty members at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. It is our mission to provide excellent clinical care while seeking to better understand the causes, treatments, and best treatment approaches for the systemic vasculitides. Each of our physicians is actively involved in clinical research. Other members of our Vasculitis Center include a clinical nurse, and several research and patient care coordinators and medical assistants who assist in the care of our patients. Our dedicated team is committed to ensuring the highest quality, state-of-the-art care for patients in the Baltimore community and around the globe.

The Center also offers JHVC Online. This is an online service that provides a secure, efficient way for patients to communicate with their doctors and their doctors to communicate with them and is available for any non-urgent clinic need. It is available 24/7 to schedule follow-up appointments, request prescription refills and inquire about lab and imaging results. Visit the Vasculitis Center website to learn more about JHVC Online.

Most patients travel to the JHVC. To ensure the trip is worth a patient’s time, effort and expense, the Vasculitis Center reviews each person’s medical records looking for indicators that vasculitis is the correct diagnosis before confirming appointments. If vasculitis indicators do not seem present, but other possible rheumatological diagnosis seems likely, a patient will be referred to the appropriate clinic within Hopkins.

To start the appointment process with the Johns Hopkins Vasculitis Center, please contact our Patient Care Coordinators who will provide guidance. They can be reached at our clinic at 410-550-6825.

Cincinnati Children’s Hospital

From the website:

International Leader in Treating Eosinophilic Disorders Our specialists within the Cincinnati Center for Eosinophilic Disorders (CCED) understand the ups and downs of living with eosinophilic disorders, which are often misdiagnosed and misunderstood. For families dealing with eosinophilic disorders, the road to diagnosis can be frustrating and challenging since symptoms masquerade as a number of conditions. But once diagnosed, symptoms of these disorders can be effectively managed in many cases.

We are international leaders in caring for patients with eosinophilic conditions and researching the cure. Our multidisciplinary team has extensive experience with these rare disorders. We have intense interest in eosinophilic disorders, their effects on health, and their impact on individuals and families. The CCED was the first center established in the Unites States to bring together experts in various disciplines to evaluate, treat and study these chronic medical problems in children and adults. Our multidisciplinary structure, composed of professionals in various divisions throughout Cincinnati Children’s, is founded in collaboration. These collaborations allow us to draw upon the expertise of specialists while permitting a unified plan of care tailored to the needs of the patient and family.

The autoimmune specialty clinics have been established to provide excellence in patient care for the most serious, potentially life-threatening forms of rheumatic disease. The Rebecca MacDonald Centre has specialty clinics focusing on:

  • rheumatoid arthritis
  • systemic lupus erythematosis
  • scleroderma
  • systemic necrotizing vasculitis

Internationally recognized experts staff each of the clinics. Together, these clinics represent one of the largest bases of patients with autoimmune disease in North America, and one of the main centres in the world devoted to these serious disorders. The clinics also serve as a major educational resource centre for post-graduate education in rheumatology. Every year, these programs attract a substantial number of medical trainees from the University of Toronto Medical School.

CanVasc

CanVasc is the Canadian network for research on vasculitides. It was created in November 2011 by Drs. Pagnoux, Carette and Khalidi. First task was to identify other referal medical centers and physicians across Canada with expertise in vasculitis and willing to be part of this new research group. Among its several other aims, important ones are to help conducting studies on vasculitis, provide support and educational material on vasculitides for physicians and trainees and, eventually, optimize the therapeutic management of patients with these rare diseases in order to further improve their outcomes.

CLICK HERE for more information on CanVasc.

The proposed CanVasc objectives are to:

  1. organize a dedicated health and research network with identification of referral (multidisciplinary) centers across Canada for patients with vasculitis. Establishment and regular updates of Guidelines and recommendations for the diagnostic and therapeutic management of patients is part of this objective.
  2. initiate, conduct, and promote studies (from CanVasc, VCRC or other vasculitis research groups) on vasculitides across Canada (epidemiological, observational, fundamental and, ultimately, therapeutic studies), using an efficient, established and rapidly mobilisable network.
  3. develop educational and awareness programs for health care providers (training sessions, fellowship, annual meeting…).
  4. stand as the Canadian referral group to identify needs in vasculitis and consider new drug approvals for vasculitis in Canada (advisory group).
